SAMS (Scottish American Military Society) is composed primarily of veterans who are of Scottish, Irish or English descent. However, any veteran is eligible to join. Our commander is Ed Gilmore and our vice commander is Bob Garlow. We have 26 members and meet at Denny’s on Boulder Highway on the third Sunday of the month at 3:00PM. Our post had a tent at the annual Highlander Games. Last year members of our Color Guard helped with the closing ceremonies. SAMS Post 711 is an avid supporter of the JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps). Every year we award top high school students, who are members of the JROTC, with certificates of recognition, SAMS medals and SAMSchallenge coins. Recently, we attended the internment of the urns of 35 veterans at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. The cremains had been sitting on the shelve at a funeral home for years. One of the veterans was from World War 1! Every second Thursday we have a post shoot at American Shooters. Food, beverages and comradeship follow afterward at The Leatherneck Club. As you can see, our post is pretty busy. In the last three months we have participated in about 50 events. One of our members, Kurtis Dunphy invited us to a pool party at his home on August 19th. Our next meeting is on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Denny’s which is across from The Eastside Cannery on Boulder Highway. For more information, please see our ad in this newspaper.
