On August 7, 1782, General George Washington created the Purple Heart award, the nation’s oldest military decoration. August 7th is nationally recognized as Purple Heart Day and on that day this year county commissioners proclaimed Clark County NV a Purple Heart County to recognize and honor combat wounded and fallen warriors. Commissioner Susan Brager reads the proclamation to Len Yelinek, Nevada Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) while Commissioners Steve Sisolak (left) and Lawrence Weekly (right) observe. Clark County will be flying the Purple Heart flag on patriotic holidays and has designated a parking space for combat wounded veterans. There are two MOPH chapters in Southern Nevada.
