The Veterans Transition Resource Center of Northern Nevada proudly presents our 10th Annual Veterans BBQ. This is a free event with special guest Sgt Dixie Thompson. Our bbq will be on June 22, 2024 from 12:00 – 2:00 pm at the Davis Residence, 1191 Manhattan Way, Gardnerville, NV 89460. We will have live entertainment, food, and more!
Sgt Dixie grew up in Mason City, Iowa, made famous in ”The Music Man” as River City. She joined and retired from the US Army, and worked in corporate America for many years before retiring from that. Along the way, she worked in different direct sales and network marketing companies while raising two sons. Both of her sons are now married. Her oldest son works at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and has given her two beautiful granddaughters. Her younger son travels as much as possible while building a career in the US Army. He currently has two fur babies and is on Drill Instructor duty at Fort
Moore (nee Benning).
One of the first women Military Police and first assigned to a combat MP unit in 1974 in Germany. The unit was re-designated as a combat support unit so that women could be assigned, but the mission didn’t change. She later served as a Military Intelligence Traffic Analyst, Linguist, and Cryptanalyst stateside and in Korea and Hawaii. In 1995, she retired after 20 years service to Las Vegas which had been her home since 1975.
She worked in corporate America for 10 years before leaving to work for herself in network marketing. She is an entrepreneur with almost fifty years in direct sales and network marketing. She has two home-based businesses as an independent affiliate with SendOutCards and an independent consultant with Watkins food products and home remedies. She serves on the board of the Women Veterans of Nevada and writes their newsletter. She is also on the board for the 709th Military Police Battalion Association, as well as being a life member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, Women Veterans Alliance, and Camouflaged Sisters. She works with other nonprofits and has received several awards for her work with the local business community and veterans, the latest being named Nevada Veteran of the Month for January 2020.
In her copious spare time, she writes books for veterans with emphasis on issues and challenges specific to women. Her leadership abilities and perspective as a veteran having served from the Vietnam era through Desert Storm are an invaluable asset. Her books can be found on Amazon by searching “Sgt Dixie”. She also knits in support of breast cancer survivors and mentors other women veterans and business owners. She loves what she does, the people she meets, and the support she is able to give back to her community.
