August 15th – 17th 2018, at the BVA Convention in Reno, Nevada, the latest technology for the blind and visually impaired will be on display. One technology sure to get attention is OrCam Technologies, MyEye 2.
This device gives independence to people who are visually impaired, blind, or have other reading difficulties. Users who are dyslexic or those who experience reading fatigue can live more independently.
Weight and size were reduced by over 90 percent from the original OrCam MyEye device. There is also no wire going to the base unit anymore. Weighing just under an ounce, and the size of a finger, it magnetically rests on the arm of any pair of eyeglasses and can read text from any surface in real time. This includes your favorite book, newspaper, text messages, computer screen and even product labels.
The MyEye 2 lasts 1-2 hours, depending on use, and includes a wall charger and power bank. It also has built-in LED lights to read in low light.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology reads printed and digital text aloud in about 2-3 seconds. It does this by recognizing an entire page or a pointing finger gesture to focus on a specific area of text. It then reads it to you through a tiny speaker by your ear.
Facial recognition software allows you to point the glasses at an individual, speak their name and the device says it back to you and then stores the information for next time, this allows you to know who you are talking to. MyEye 2 can store up to 100 faces.
The device can also identify colors, money denominations, and can recognize up to 150 different products you teach it, down to the size of a credit card, and includes a database of one million bar codes of national products in grocery stores. It requires no internet connectivity to function, thereby assuring privacy and reliability.
This revolutionary hands-free device also recognizes other gestures including, telling time and a stop reading gesture. It comes ready to use in the U.S., with three languages, English, Spanish and French.
MyEye 2 is available through the Veterans Administration and is now dispensed in all 13 Blind Rehabilitation Centers across the U.S along with other VISOR Advanced and Intermediate Low Vision Clinics. OrCam Technologies will be at Booth #208 at the BVA Convention next month, August 15th-17th in Reno, Nevada.
