Mickey Durkin, Social Committee, announces upcoming BBQ at the Fisher House. Our members are invited, as we at JWV Post 64 donated the BBQs.
• Members were asked to sign up for the upcoming Potluck Breakfast/Brunch on Sunday, May 19, for either Appetizer, Salad, Main Dish, Dessert, Beverage, or Other.
• On Wednesday, June 12, at 1:00 p.m. we will have a social get together at New York Pizza and Pasta on the corner of Jones and Sahara.
• Reserve the date of Sunday, December 22, for our annual Chanukah Luncheon.
Past Commander Steve Seiden gave a report about the Kline Veterans Fund helping 25 indigent veterans, including Shade Tree and U.S. Vets. The new Executive Director Stephanie Helms has many events planned for raising funds to help more veterans and families.
The big fundraising event in May will be the Memorial Day Poppy Drive May 22 – May 27. Sign-up sheets were passed around for members to commit to shifts during these dates: May 22 – 27 and times: 9 – 12; 12 – 3; 3 – 6. Commander Jerry Bootzin is the Chairman of the Memorial Day Poppy Drive.
Jack and Tanya Weingarten were among the attendees. This was Tanya’s first meeting.
Guest speaker Dr. Sondra Cosgrove, instructor of History at the College of Southern Nevada, gave a talk about “Nevada History with a twist”; giving us new insights about how Las Vegas started and why, and the connection to Native Americans and how important it is ‘when to be where’ – and she enjoyed meeting our JWV Post 64 Life Member Kenneth Hill, who was one of the Founders of the College of Southern Nevada in 1973.
